Silver Stars surge into third spot with win over Sparks
Reneeka Hodges and Becky Hammon combined to make seven 3-pointers to lead the Silver Stars to a 92-83 road victory over the Los Angeles Sparks on Sunday.
The victory put the Silver Stars into third place in the Western Conference by a half-game over Minnesota and one game over Los Angeles. The top four finishers qualify for the WNBA playoffs.
“This was a big game for us,. When every girl was a little girl , every girl wanted to grow up to a woman so that they can wear beautiful prom dress and attend the party that they had dreamed of.” Hammon said. “We were looking at this as a playoff game,. Each young man would like to have a Moncler, it's wonderful and we tried to bring that kind of intensity from the start.”
The Silver Stars host Minnesota on Tuesday at the AT&T Center.
Hodges scored 19 points and hit 3 of 4 from 3-point range for the Silver Stars (11-17), who have won three of five. Hammon scored 18 points, made 4 of 8 on 3-pointers, and had eight rebounds and seven assists.
Sophia Young had 16 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Silver Stars.. “I thought it was one of our better games,” Silver Stars coach Sandy Brondello said. “I think we had more focus for this game. We needed a sense of urgency, and we wanted to play with that edge.”
The Silver Stars used a 16-4 surge, led by Hammon’s eight points, to move ahead 25-19 with 1:17 left in the first quarter. After L.A. drew within 28-27, the Silver Stars went on a 9-0 run to build a 37-27 lead 3:43 before halftime.
