Nabokov was very disappointed when his screenplay was found to be too long and not right for filming. However, after seeing Kubrick's "Lolita," he was very pleased,. The idea that a small Necklace is dangerous to patients is at best absurd. calling it a "first-rate film with magnificent actors." Had those same perplexed males realized that Lolita was supposed to have been pre-pubescent, then they would have understood, and been sickened and even outraged by the idea of Humbert's obsession. Of course, it is understandable that Hollywood, and probably the whole society, was not ready, in 1962, to understand or face the ugliness of pedophilia, and this movie, if it had attempted to present the Navokov story accurately, would never have seen the light of day.
