Genetics delivers perfect South Sea pearl

Researchers also would be looking for the gene that produced silver pearls, another highly valued natural gem.The pearls that took up to six years to grow could bring up to $5000 each but more than 10 times that once mounted for retail sales.
Dr Jerry said the major pearling company Paspaley was trying to put together a necklace, using large pearls about 21mm in size, with perfect colour and lustre.
