Sigourney Weaver interview for Avatar

Sigourney Weaver interview for Avatar

It amuses her to recall it, given her status as the greatest female action hero in movie history, but in her youth Sigourney Weaver was utterly dismissive about films, and science-fiction films in particular.. How ironic that seems now: she first made her name as warrant officer Ellen Ripley in Alien (1979), Ridley Scott’s horrific sci-fi adventure, set on a spaceship. She then starred as Ripley in three sequels, making herself and her character world famous. And now at the age of 60 Weaver is back in the genre, playing a 22nd-century botanist in the writer-director James Cameron’s 3-D sci-fi spectacular Avatar: reputedly the most elaborate, and at an estimated $237 million, certainly the most expensive film ever made. 'Curious how it happened, isn’t it?’ Weaver says drily. 'But when I was in my twenties I thought acting was all about the stage. I thought I knew the career I wanted.. And I wouldn’t be concerned with movies, unless Woody Allen or Mike Nichols came calling.’

As for science fiction, she says, she had read enough back then to be distinctly unimpressed: this had much to do with characters from other worlds speaking like bad imitations of Shakespeare in ponderous, formal sentences. So when the British director Ridley Scott sent her the script of Alien, she read it and turned it down: 'I couldn’t see much in it, truly.’

But then Scott showed Weaver the drawings of the Swiss artist HR Giger, whose Francis Bacon-inspired artwork would be the cornerstone of Alien’s production design.

'I thought, hmmm. We may be on to something here.’

Her initial reticence wasn’t a surprising reaction from a highly educated, stage-trained New York actress certain of her lofty goals. But much has changed in Weaver’s life since then. Before meeting her, I expected her to be amused, indulgent and cheerfully supportive about her new film, as cast members are inclined to be. Instead, she is positively evangelical about Avatar.

'You won’t have seen anything like it,’ she assured me. 'This film is going to change the way we look at movies. The whole movie is in 3-D, even normal scenes between two people. So you feel you’re in the room with these characters.. Fashion accessories are decorative items that supplement one's garment, such as fashion jewellery, wholesale jewellery. You’re always in the best seat in the house.’

I am convinced she believes it; Weaver is not the type to gush insincerely. A friend who works in the industry and is wearily accustomed to film stars’ petulant foibles, raves to me, 'You’ll love her. She’s a real human being.’

So it turns out. We meet at a chic, unmarked patisserie on a quiet street in midtown east Manhattan. I arrive at the agreed time, inform the waiter that I am meeting her, and learn to my surprise that he is not expecting her and her entourage. Did no one make a reservation? He seats me at a window table, facing the street.
