International arrivals into Sydney have remained steady at about 2.5 million a year over the decade.pandora beads

Mr Brown said it had been expected at the time of the Olympics that tourist numbers could be as high as eight million to 10 million people a year by now.

Australia's balance of trade in tourism has slumped from a high of a $3.6 billion surplus in the year after the Games to rising deficits as the number of tourists coming to Australia has levelled off and an increasing number of Australians now travel overseas each year.. Australia's balance of trade in tourism is set to reach a deficit of $7.3bn for the financial year ended in June.

The Tourism Forum predicts it will rise to $9bn in the current financial year.

The share of tourism in Australia's total economy has fallen by 25 per cent since the 2000 Games at a time when tourism in the Asian region has been growing rapidly.. Mr Brown said there were fewer "classic tourists" - ordinary holiday-makers - coming to Sydney and Australia than there were before the Games.

He said the inbound arrival figures had been propped up by the number of international students and their families, and short-term business travellers.. "Total arrivals have stayed at around five million a year, but the proportion of those who are your classic tourist has reduced," Mr Brown said.
