Carolyn Clifford sued after vouching for husband's bills

Sysco Detroit's suit in Wayne County Circuit Court alleges it "agreed to extend credit to the Detroit Fish Market and to continue to provide goods and services" in October after Clifford personally guaranteed to pay the bills. The restaurant closed in April; Taylor filed for bankruptcy in June and Sysco claims Clifford now owes $104,. Clifford didn't return a call for comment Wednesday, while her lawyer declined comment. Daniel Quick, an attorney for Taylor, said the restaurant -- not the couple -- owes the money.

Taylor's Southern Hospitality Restaurant Group once owned or managed some of Detroit's most chic restaurants. In the past few years, most have closed, including Seldom Blues, The Woodward, Sweet Georgia Brown in Greektown and Magnolia Restaurant & Bar near the Detroit River.

Taylor closed the Detroit Fish Market and Detroit's Breakfast House & Grill in April, a day after the Downtown Development Authority sued him on claims he tried to "defraud" the city and owed $180,000 in back rent. Taylor denied the charges through a spokesman and said he worked hard to make the restaurants work.

The lawsuit has since ended in a confidential settlement, Quick said. The "swift resolution" of the suits allowed a new restaurant, the Detroit Seafood Market, to replace the closed Fish Market this summer, said Brian Holdwick, executive vice president for the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. that oversees the downtown authority.

According to Taylor's personal bankruptcy filing, he owes 69 creditors at least $3.4 million.

The debts include: $740,000 to General Motors Riverfront Holdings for a loan for Seldom Blues; $577,000 to the IRS; $280,000 to Sysco; and $277,181 to Northern Lakes Seafood and Meats in Hamtramck.

Taylor lists $321,400 in assets, including a $268,000 Detroit condo, $2,500 in suits and coats and his $1,500 wedding ring. He lists another $40,000 in jewelry he owns, which is at Norman's Jewelry and Loan in Southfield. He owes the pawn shop $6,724, according to the court records.
