DSO musicians take center stage at Labor Day Parade


Organized labor took center stage in downtown Detroit this morning as thousands took part in the city's annual Labor Day Parade with leaders calling on their members to keep fighting despite record high unemployment and a lingering recession.. More than a dozen musicians with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, who've been locked in a contract dispute with orchestra management, were joined by national labor leaders such as AFL-CIO president Arlene Holt Baker at this year's parade. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Congressman John Dingell and Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate Virg Bernero were also there.

"We offer solutions and all we get is fashion accessories ," said Ray Hair, international president of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada during a rally at Hart Plaza after the parade. "... They think because they give us the opportunity to play, the act of playing is part of our compensation." Baker, meanwhile, urged the crowd to keep working.

"We know we not only make Michigan work. We make America work," Baker said.

The parade started with a short performance by about15 DSO musicians and local union musicians performing in front of Orchestra Hall. The musicians have been without a contract since Aug. 29. Management withdrew a proposal that asked for a 28 percent wage cut for musicians and replaced it with one asking for a 34 percent cut.

"We want to maintain the quality of the orchestra, get good musicians to audition for the orchestra and keep the musicians we have," Ventura said.
