Craigslist adult services section blocked
Attorney General Martha Coakley responded with guarded optimism to yesterday’s report that Craigslist was apparently shutting down the adult services section of its website, citing continued concerns that ads such as the one that allegedly led to the slaying of a New York woman in a Boston hotel last year could find their way into other sections of the site.
While she said she applauds the move, she added in a phone interview: “What today’s action means, I think,. Fashion accessories are decorative items that supplement one's garment, such as fashion jewellery,gold jewellery,women's jewellery.You can wholesale jewellery. remains to be seen.’’
The link to the adult services ads on Craigslist was replaced yesterday with a black bar marked “censored,’’ a development first reported by the Associated Press.
The move by Craigslist, whose officials could not immediately be reached for comment yesterday, came after 17 attorneys general sent a letter to the company on Aug. 24 urging closure of the section.. Coakley’s office had sent a separate letter to Craigslist on the same day urging the popular online bulletin board for products and services to eliminate its adult services section.. Coakley planned to begin hearings this fall to gather evidence for an initiative to change the federal statute shielding Craigslist and other sites from liability connected to violence stemming from an adult services ad. A Coakley spokesman said the hearings are still scheduled, but her office will be reviewing those plans based on the actions the company takes.
Coakley said yesterday that shutting down adult services on the site should help shine a light on the anonymous connections that allow crimes to be committed,.
