DSO players lead procession

The Detroit Symphony Orchestra's musicians took their contract battle to the streets Monday, kicking off Detroit's annual Labor Day Parade and rallying to keep the orchestra as a source of pride in Detroit.

Joined by musicians from across the country and national labor leaders such as AFL-CIO President Arlene Holt Baker, the musicians, who've been without a contract since Aug. 29, were among thousands of union workers who took part in this year's parade,. "We offer solutions and all we get is pain,. "They think because they give us the opportunity to play, the act of playing is part of our compensation."

The DSO musicians have agreed to a 22 percent wage cut, said assistant principal oboist Brian Ventura. But orchestra management wants a 34 percent wage cut as ticket sales and contributions have declined. In the last two years, the orchestra has had deficits of $3.8 million and $6.5 million.

"It's important for Detroit and the state of Michigan to have a world class orchestra that can be a real source of pride," Ventura said.

The mood was upbeat at Monday's parade, despite the lingering recession, 13 percent unemployment rate in Michigan,.
